Passengers traveling to or from Penang International Airport have multiple
transportation options, including taxis, e-hailing services like Grab, and
three bus routes offering convenient access to the capital city. The
Rapid Penang bus services have a dedicated counter on the ground level of
the arrivals hall, where passengers can purchase tickets for bus line U401
at a cost of approximately RM2.00 - RM3.00.
The airport is served by Rapid Penang Bus routes 102, 401, and 401E, which
have stops directly at the terminal building. Rapid Penang Route 102,
relaunched on March 15, 2010, connects the airport to the popular beach area
of Batu Ferringhi. This bus route makes several stops along the way until it
reaches KOMTAR, a central hub in George Town. From there, it's just a 5 to
10-minute walk to hotels like the Tune Hotel. However, due to the multiple
stops, the service can be slower compared to other modes of transport.
Taxis
Airport taxis, identifiable by their white color, operate on a prepaid
coupon system. Passengers are advised to purchase a coupon at the taxi
counters located in the arrivals hall before proceeding to the taxi stands.
The taxi driver will issue a counterfoil to confirm the transaction once the
passenger has been safely transported to their destination. This system
provides reassurance to foreign travelers, eliminating concerns about
negotiating the correct fare due to language barriers.
It's important to note that city taxis are not permitted to pick up
passengers at the airport. The taxi fare is determined by the destination
and divided into seven different zones. For example, Zone 1 costs around
RM20, Zone 2 is approximately RM30, and Zone 5 (George Town) is about RM50.
Between 12:00 am and 6:00 am, a 50% surcharge is applied to taxi services
regardless of the destination.
GRAB / Other e-Hailing Services
The Airport Management has allocated a complimentary waiting area for
e-Hailing / Grab drivers at its landside which is just 5 minutes away from
the terminal before picking up their passengers. To reach the e-hailing
pickup point at Penang International Airport, exit Door 1 from the arrival
hall, cross the road to the Multilevel Car Park, enter the building, turn
right, and walk towards the designated e-hailing area to meet your Grab car.
A ride from
Penang Airport to George Town costs around RM30 (depends on traffic
conditions), whereas a regular taxi is
about RM50. The airport bus is a cheaper option at roughly RM3 but takes
significantly longer.
For passengers arriving from various locations on the mainland, there are
direct taxi and e-hailing services available between Penang Sentral and Penang
International Airport, providing convenient transportation options.
The proposed Penang Airport LRT Station will connect the Airport from Komtar
Transportation Hub. It is located outside the terminal building of the
Penang International Airport. The proposed Penang Airport LRT Station is
expected to complete and start operation on a later date.
